1- Are the mechanical (key-wind or weight driven) clocks of today as good as the clocks of yesterday?

Without doubt today's clockmakers are just as concerned about longevity as they were yesterday. With regular maintenance today’s mechanical clocks will perform as well as their antique counterparts. Remember all mechanical devices need maintenance.... And so do clocks! return to top

2 - Are quartz clocks better than mechanical clocks?

The quartz clocks of today introduce a new and exciting category to our world of timekeeping. For the "too busy to be bothered" clock lover the battery clock is a god -send. Simply change the battery each year... No muss no fuss and no maintenance. Also, with the introduction of the quartz clock comes interesting and entertaining features that are not possible in the mechanical clocks. 3 - What sort of clocks make a good "investment?"

Quality, quality, quality whether it be an antique or new clock. As a rule a fine quality clock will, at very worst, hold it's value. For the investment motivated buyer we would be happy to consult with you in order to direct you toward a "sure thing" investment grade clock. For most of us clock lovers, the daily enjoyment of our clocks is an investment in itself. It’s comforting to know it's also holding it’s value too. return to top

4 - Should my clock match my furniture?

Within the last 10-15 years we have seen a major change in how people select their clocks. Rather than trying to perfectly match the existing furniture many buyers are motivated by setting a theme with the clock. The clock is becoming more of a functional piece of art, an accent to the home. As long as you stay within a broad theme it's difficult
to "make a mistake". For example, a highly carved Austrian piece would be a sharp tension in a home of chrome and glass contemporary. However, such a piece would look elegant in a home already rich in various wood styles and finishes. Generally, you will know when you see "the right clock" for you. It's very much like choosing a pet, or a car or even a lover... You know when it's right for you...
It's a feeling.

6 - What is the function of the moon dial?

It takes 29 1/2 days (lunar month) for the moon to go around the earth. This dial once set up will keep track of the moon revolution. The full moon occurs on the 15th day. return to top

7 - How accurate are grandfather clocks?

Can be within one minute per month by adjusting the length of the pendulum. Speed up, move up; slow down, move down. Turn the adjusting nut on the bottom of the pendulum disc to adjust. return to top

8 - Can I turn off the chimes?

All of todays grandfather clocks offer a chime silence option. return to top

9 - How do you wind a grandfather clock?

Pulling on the chain or using the winding crank lifts the weights up. This should be done once a week. return to top

10 - How do you take care of them?
